Lance Carter

Coach

  |

First-time trainee specialist

Full Bio

Coach Lance Carter finished his first IRONMAN known as Vineman in 1993, even though he was woefully underprepared, having cobbled together a training plan by reading articles in Triathlon Magazine.  Keep in mind, the idea and industry of triathlon coaching did not exist in 1993.  Lance was determined to return to Vineman better prepared.  This quest for knowledge is what fueled his desire to learn, understand, and apply the principles of endurance training.  Three years later in 1996 he returned to Vineman where he clocked his IRONMAN personal best time of 10 hours 18 minutes.  In 2000, Lance applied his knowledge of training to coaching other athletes, helping The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Washington/Alaska Chapter put in its first triathlon coaching program. In 2023 Lance joined the Peak Center.

A Level I Coach certified by USA Triathlon, USA Track & Field, and U.S. Master’s Swimming, Lance uses his 20+ years coaching to guide others in achieving their goals and dreams.  He specializes in coaching first timers, whether it's for a Sprint distance triathlon or IRONMAN, 5K run or first time Boston Marathon Qualifier.

“One of the unique aspects to accomplishing something for the first time is believing you can.  Often, as a coach, it is my job to believe in the athlete more than they believe in themselves.  Sometimes the simple act of having someone in your corner is the difference that makes the difference.  When an athlete accomplishes something they previously did not think was possible, the finish line is just the beginning.” – Coach Lance

In addition to his 9 IRONMAN Triathlons, 40+ 70.3 Triathlons (PR 4:50 hrs), 7 Marathons (3:09 hrs) and 20+ years of coaching, Lance has also worked as a certified massage therapist, owned a specialty running & triathlon store named Everyday Athlete in Kirkland, Washington, designed swimming wetsuits for Blueseventy, is a cancer survivor (Malignant Melanoma) and has authored two books:

Live Big: Crossing the finish line is just the beginning

Six-Word Lessons for Successful Triathletes: 100 Lessons for Successful Training and Racing
